Public Works agencies need well-qualified maintenance personnel to keep their equipment running. Jobs are increasingly going to those with a certificate of diploma in mechanics, machine shop, pneumatics, hydraulics, welding and related skills. PWA apprenticeship programs give the cadet graduate on- the-job experience to bolster classroom training .You may be studying subjects such as blueprint reading, shop mathematics, welding, computers and electronics. There are many areas of specialization within the area of industrial equipment maintenance. Students may choose to focus on pipefitting and the basic installation and maintenance of industrial piping systems. They may specialize in fluid power, learning basic concepts of pneumatics and hydraulics, with a focus on prime movers and controls. They may decide to study electrical installation procedures including construction troubleshooting and preventative maintenance. Keeping a city running smoothly means keeping the city’s equipment smoothly running.
